This Day in History

On the same day of 1986, the US’s Space Shuttle Challenger was rammed into pieces over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of central Florida, at 11:39 a.m. EST (16:39 UTC). This disaster caused because of the seal failure in the SRB joint, allowed the flare to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent attachment hardware and external fuel tank.

All the seven crew members were killed in this crash. A special commission, Rogers Commission was appointed to investigate the accident and the crew compartmet many other vehicle fragments were finally recovered from the ocean floor by recovery operation.
